How To Identify Top Candidates

Sometimes, it is hard to identify top-tier candidates in today's market.  During the interview, please pay close attention to their skills and personality.

Here is a checklist that you can use to ensure that your candidate is top of the line!

1. Communication skills

Are they effective communicators?  Communication is vital for any position.  The candidate should communicate effectively not only during the interview but also throughout the hiring process.  Do they answer emails, phone calls, text messages promptly?  Or does it take a couple of days to get back to you?  When speaking, what does their body language communicate?  The answers to these questions will help determine if your candidate will communicate effectively while at the job.

2. A Positive Attitude

When employees project positivity in the workplace, it is contagious.  The positivity can be seen in employees' attitudes towards your company.  Employees are more excited about coming to work in a positive environment versus a negative environment.  The candidate should be someone with a positive attitude, willing to tackle challenges, and a good role model for other employees.

3.  Teamwork

How do they work with others?  Ask them about how they have handled difficult situations or worked with a team in the past.  You could also contact their previous employers to see how they handle teamwork.  If you introduce them to the department or company members before hiring, observe how they interact with other employees.  Candidates need to be able to work well with others.

4.  Achieving Goals

How do they achieve their goals?  This is where you can ask questions specifically about their goals in the interview.  An example would be, "Tell me about your proudest accomplishment in your career."  The question will automatically require them to talk about their skills to achieve a goal.  You could also ask them how they determine and set goals.

5.  Quick Thinker

Are they able to think on their feet?  Behavioral questions can help to figure out the answer to this.  It is essential to see how someone reacts to an out-of-the-ordinary question.  Proactive and reactive behaviors are expected and hard to avoid in the workplace.  This is especially important for a medical role.
