How to look for a job while still employed

It is very common for people to look for jobs while still employed.  There are many reasons as to why this could be happening:

  • too long of a commute
  • moving
  • unsatisfied with the work environment
  • unsatisfied with career

Whatever the reason may be, you want to make sure that you are not burning bridges with your current company in the process of looking for a new job.  We have compiled a few tips that will help you through this process:

Don't talk about it

Word gets around quicker than you think in an office.  You do not want your boss to find out about it from someone else #1.  #2 you also do not want your boss to find our prematurely.  Either one of these scenarios could provoke your employer into taking adverse action.  However, do make sure that you give your boss adequate notice, so they have time to find a replacement.

Update your Linkedin

You may not be wanting to upload your resume to public career sites or advertise yourself on social media, so Linkedin is a great option when looking for a new job.  Linkedin is used by everyone from candidates to company owners.  Updating your information on Linkedin will not be abnormal, but if you are still worried, you can choose not to notify your network of your changes.

Ask for confidentiality

While you are talking to potential employers, it is important that you ask them to keep your conversations confidential.  You need to be upfront that you are still at your current job, and you have not informed your employer about the change yet, so they do not contact them as a reference.  They will understand and respect your privacy.  Additionally, inform them that you will need to give your employer two weeks notice before you can officially start your new job, if they choose to offer you a position.

Respect your employer's time and technology

Do not use your company computer or company time to search for jobs.  You should keep all of these activities to after hours on your personal equipment if available and your personal time.

Don't lose focus

While you are looking for a new job, you still need to be focused on the one you have.  Do not start halfway completing your work because your employer will notice.  You do not know how long your job search will take, so you want to be on your A-game at work the entire time leading up to the quit.
