The new year often means new beginnings. Lists of resolutions have started to make an appearance. As you think about your new year resolutions, do they include a new job? Or possibly a entirely new career path? If it does, you need a resume that will make you stand out from the crowd! Follow these tips to secure your new job or career!
1. Choose a layout
There are 3 different format types to choose from for a resume. The job you are applying for will determine which type of resume you want.
- Chronological- Beginning with the most recent experience and working your way backward, this format puts your work experience and education in chronological order. If unsure which format to choose, this is your safest bet as it is the go-to format for most people.
- Functional- This format lists your experiences in order of how significant your work experience is in relation to the job you are applying for. This is best used when you change career paths, so employers can quickly see your relevant work experience.
- Combination- The combination format is exactly as it sounds. It is a combination of chronological and functional layouts. The most relevant position and education you hold goes first and then switches to chronological order.
2. The Header
Without a proper header, the recruiter or employer will not be able to find your contact information easily. This is very frustrating for them. To avoid this situation, your header should be formatted to include the following:
- Name
- Street Address
- City, State, Zip Code
- Phone Number
- Additional Phone Number (if you have one)
- Email Address
Your header should be eye-catching, so it is easy to find. The phone number and email address you listed should be monitored at all times so you do not miss a call or email from your potential employer.
A Tip: Make sure that your email is professional. Your first and last name is always a safe way to go for email addresses.
3. Career Objectives
The best way to grab attention is to include keywords from the job description in your career objectives. A career objective should be short and straightforward, with 1-2 sentences. If you do include keywords from the job description, make sure to change them when applying for different jobs. This is an excellent way to personalize your resume for the specific job you are applying for.
The job market is competitive. By following these tips, you will be well on your way to standing out from the crowd. And who knows... 2022 may bring a new career!
