Are you hiring the best employees?

Hiring goes beyond matching skills to duties.  It is very important that you are picking candidates that are the best matches for your company.  Do they get along with others on your staff?  Values personality, aptitude, and capability are all equally as important as the skills on the resume.

Here are a few tips to make sure that you are hiring your best employees:

Put your best foot forward

It is extremely difficult to attract the right candidates if your company is not desirable to them.  A job posting is no longer the best way to recruit candidates.  Now, attracting A+ candidates, begins with the social media interaction, selling your company culture, creating an environment that's great to work in, and being a fixture in your community.  Candidates will be researching your company before the interview, so you need to make sure that you are putting your company in a position for success.

Also, you need to put in as much effort as the candidate:

  • Be on time for the interview
  • Don't get distracted
  • Know their resume and background before-hand

Don't rush it

There will be some candidates that will make you want to give an offer on the spot; however, avoid offering anyone a job too quickly.  You need to look at hiring as an investment.  Many companies will say that their experience with hiring an employee too early has ended up as a negative experience.  Although it is hard to be picky in today's market, it will pay off to explore all of your options by judging everyone with the same criteria and evaluation options with others in the office.

You get what you pay for

Prior to making an offer, you should research the rate for the position you are hiring for and consider all of the expenses that would make up a living wage.  Chances are, your candidate ahs done their homework, and they have a number in mind.  If you meet or exceed that number, they will be more likely to accept an offer.  If it comes down to a question of money, your investment in top talent will be worth it in the long run!
