Bring “back-to-school” to your workday
In case you’ve missed the tax-free shopping holiday earlier this month, and all the “back-to-school” themed ads that go along with it, we’re here to say that it’s that time again. The time of year when school-aged children, and college students alike, trade in their bathing suits and board shorts for backpacks filled with bountiful books.
If the sound of school buses and smell of freshly sharpened pencils can’t help but make you feel nostalgic, then give in to your inner school kid and enroll yourself in a course of higher education. This doesn’t necessarily mean the kind of higher ed you would find online or in a classroom. Although, furthering your knowledge of a subject is always good for individual growth, there are many ways to continue down the path of self-improvement. After all, isn’t that what school is all about?
Whether you’re working on a career change, or have already found your career bliss, you’re never too old to stop learning, and to have fun while doing it! Why not, go out and splurge on some new threads for the office? And while you’re at it, pick up a biographical copy of someone famous who inspires you. Do your homework first, and confirm that it’s an easy read so you can enjoy it from cover to cover. Reading about the struggles and triumphs experienced in one person’s life, might help you to overcome the obstacles you face on a daily basis.
Another good exercise to get you thinking is to update your resume. Although most would agree that this is done just before a new job search begins, maintaining an accurate log of your work-related contributions and achievements is crucial to the advancement of your career. The practice of writing your own resume is two-pronged: it proactively prepares you for new employment opportunities, and it also allows you to assess your own self-worth. In essence, your resume is like your report card for the real-world. It helps to keep you on track.
And while we’re on the subject of good exercises, the physical form of the word is one that strengthens both the heart, and the mind. We were all forced in to taking organized gym by the time we were in the 1st grade, and were required to partake all throughout our high school years. Yet, why must we stop at grade 12? Study after study proves that even the most moderate exercise helps to lift a person’s mood. The next time you find yourself reaching for that extra cup of coffee at work, consider going outside for a stroll. In fact, recruit a few of your coworkers to join you, and you can call it recess!
There are many ways to relive our undergrad years without pulling a Rodney Dangerfield in “Back to School”. The key is to take the beloved past times from the days you were in school, and revive your work week by making something old, new again…even if that means sharing a box of Lunchables with your coworkers in the break room.
